I became involved in the field of adoption quite by accident. In
1989, I was looking for a part time job, since, like most social
workers, I had come to the realization that one full time job would not pay all the bills. A friend of mine told me about a small agency he worked for in New York City that placed children from the foster care system with families as far north as the Capital District, where I live. Little did I realize that taking on this part time job would change my life and lead me down a road I could never have imagined.

I had earned my master’s in Social Work from the State University of Albany in 1984 and later became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Almost from the beginning, working in the adoption field has been and continues to be one of the most fulfilling jobs I have ever had.

As the years went by, I decided to adopt from the very agency with whom I had been working. In 1998, I adopted my first son, Chris, from the New York State foster care system, when he was twelve years old. Three years later, I adopted my second son, Matt, when he was fifteen years old. Chris, Matt and I are family. We’ve been through some ups and downs, but we remain closely connected and I am proud beyond words with their achievements, accomplishments and the young men they have become. After all these years raising two boys as a single parent, I have learned innumerable lessons as well as techniques to deal with children with behavioral issues.

During the past almost twenty years working in the adoption field, I have completed hundreds of home studies and post placement reports for both domestic as well as international adoptions. I live in the Capital District, the area surrounding the three cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy, and am affiliated with the courts in many counties of upstate New York. In addition, I am also familiar with several adoption attorneys as well as many adoption agencies that place children domestically and internationally. I have worked with
many families dealing with post adoption issues as well as behavioral concerns exhibited by children years following their adoption.
