Each country develops requirements for adoptive parents and adoption processes, based on its history, national priorities, and culture.

In choosing a country and resource, adoptive applicants must consider whether they are eligible to adopt from a particular country and whether they are comfortable with the ages and race of the children who are available for adoption from that country.

The Office of Children’s Issues provides information and assistance about the adoption process in over 60 countries, including:

• Information about visa requirements and other U.S. requirements for international adoption
  
  
• Information about The Hague Intercountry Adoption Convention, and coordination with other countries about the treaty and related matters
  
  
• Help with individual inquiries about the status of adoption cases
